Is Organic Milk Healthier?



Organic dairy products make up 15% of all organic food in the United States (1).

Many consumers prefer organic cow milk because they believe it contains higher concentrations of nutrients, is better for the environment and healthier than regular cow milk (2, 3).

However, some studies suggest that farming practices are more responsible for the quality and safety of cow’s milk than it is for organic milk (1, 3).

This article explains how organic cow milk compares to conventional cow milk in terms of nutritional value, ingredients and environmental impact.

Studies show that organic milk has a slightly higher concentration of vitamin E, iron and the polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. These nutrients are important for brain function, eyesight, and the growth and development of children (1, 3, 4, 5).

However, these differences may be marginal and offer no greater nutritional benefit than regular milk (1, 4).

Other reviews suggest that farming practices that allow cows to graze and forage – rather than organic farming itself – may be responsible for the improved fatty acid content of organic milk (1, 3).

In addition, organic milk contains less iodine and selenium, two nutrients important for thyroid health (1, 6).

Organic and conventional milk have similar amounts of essential minerals like calcium, potassium and sodium.

Ordinary milk has slightly fewer calories and fewer saturated fats and proteins than organic milk.

Traditional dairy farms, on the other hand, use a range of antibiotics on cows. The medicine is often used to treat mastitis, an inflammation of the mammary glands (10, 11).

Antibiotics like beta-lactams can then be found in the finished dairy product – albeit in safe quantities, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (10, 11, 12, 13).

Drug residues refer to small amounts of drugs found in dairy products after they have been used to treat animals during rearing. These can include antibiotics or growth hormones (10).

The FDA has set safe levels for drug residues in milk and meat. Drug residues above the FDA limit are illegal (10, 12).

A recent study found that compared to normal milk, the content of antibiotics and pesticides in organic milk was undetectable (14).

This is partly because many drugs are banned on organic farms. Animals on these farms are often treated with alternative therapies, including botanicals, vitamin supplements, and homeopathic therapy (15).

In addition, waiting times must be observed when using approved drugs in organic farms. For example, if a cow is given the opioid butorphanol, it must not be slaughtered for meat for 42 days and its milk must be discarded for 8 days (16).

Cows naturally produce bovine growth hormone – also called bovine somatotropin (bST) – to help regulate milk production. Many conventional dairy farms use a synthetic version to produce milk at a lower cost (14).

The FDA has determined that bST is safe for humans. The agency approved the use of bST under the trade name PosilacTM in the 1990s (17).

This means that milk and meat from cows treated with PosilacTM are safe for human consumption (17).

A recent study found that normal milk has a higher bST content than organic milk (14).

Because lactating cows naturally have high bST levels and the natural and synthetic bST compounds are so similar, the FDA has not set a limit for the amount of bST in cow’s milk (10).

Organic cow milk lasts longer than normal milk – 40–60 days unopened compared to 15–17 days for conventional milk – due to ultra-high temperature processing (UHT) (18).

Typically, pasteurizing cow’s milk involves heating it to 161 ° F (71.7 ° C) for 15 seconds. This process protects the vitamins and organic compounds in milk (18, 19).

UHT, on the other hand, heats milk to 137.8 ° C (280 ° F) for 2 seconds and provides better protection against bacterial growth. This is important on organic farms because the cows do not take antibiotics (18).

Not all organic milk undergoes UHT, so the shelf life may vary between organic dairy products (18).


Regular milk has higher, albeit safe, levels of drug residues, including antibiotics and growth hormones, than organic milk. Organic milk has a longer shelf life due to the pasteurization processes it goes through.

Consumers are aware of the environmental impacts of conventional agriculture and tend to support environmentally friendly cultivation methods (20, 21, 22).

Although long-term studies are poor, organic farming can be more environmentally friendly than conventional farming. It is characterized by a higher soil quality and lower nutrient losses (23, 24).

However, there is conflicting information about nitrogen oxide, carbon and ammonia emissions. Organic farms may produce higher amounts of these emissions, but more research is needed (23, 24).

Regardless, organic milks have a slightly higher price tag than regular options. A gallon of Whole Foods organic whole milk costs $ 5.99, compared to $ 4.09 for a gallon of regular whole milk (25, 26).
