Q&A: UN Food Systems Summit Opportunity for the World to Unite on Healthy, Fair & Sustainable Food Systems

UNITED NATIONS, July 9, 2021 (IPS) – Before the COVID-19 pandemic turned all areas of life upside down, the world was behind the goal of ending hunger by 2030. According to the United Nations, more than 820 million people were already classified as food insecure, meaning they did not have access to reliable and sufficient amounts of affordable, healthy food.

The effects of measures to contain the virus, land degradation, climate change and the global rise in extreme poverty for the first time in over 20 years make the transition to sustainable food systems more important than ever.

The United Nations Food Systems Summit hopes to bring together scientific, financial and political commitment to transform global food systems. The aim is to introduce systems that are productive and environmentally sound, involve the poor and promote healthy eating.

The Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition (BCFN) Foundation, a long-time investor in research, education and high-level events on sustainable food systems, has been actively involved in activities leading up to the summit.

IPS interviewed the research director of the think tank Dr. Marta Antonelli and nutritionist Katarzyna Dembska on climate change and nutrition, successful nutrition systems and the foundation’s own initiatives to improve education, science and skills for healthy, fair and sustainable food systems.

Inter Press Service (IPS): The UN states that half of all agricultural land is degraded and that due to climate change and drought combined with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, 34 million people are at risk of famine. How can food systems be protected in this dire context?

Katarzyna Dembska (KD): According to the IPCC, land use change, land use intensification and climate change have contributed to desertification and land degradation. At the same time, many land-based measures that help adapt and mitigate climate change can also combat desertification and land degradation and improve food security. Examples include sustainable food production, improved and sustainable forest management, management of soil organic carbon, conservation of ecosystems and land restoration, less deforestation and degradation, and a reduction in food loss and waste.

Integrated crop and livestock management systems are an example of sustainable food production that increases efficiency and environmental sustainability with a truly circular approach: for example, fertilizer increases crop production and plant residues and by-products feed animals, which improves their productivity. Integrated rice-fish systems, which have a long history in many Asian countries, are another example of very integrated systems that also contribute to increased food security.

In addition, the Eat Lancet Commission has identified sustainable land management practices that implement a zero expansion policy that does not require land use changes, especially from new agricultural land into natural ecosystems and biodiverse forests, as a key action to achieve the so-called Great Food Transformation .

IPS: What should the public know about the relationship between diet and climate change?

Marta Antonelli (MA): Food systems, from the farm to the consumer to disposal, account for 21-37 percent of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. IPS: The UN Food Systems Summit in September hopes to change the way food is grown, processed, packaged and marketed. What do you hope for from the milestone summit?

MA: The UN Food System Summit (FSS) provides an unprecedented opportunity to advance the global path to healthy, safe, fair and sustainable food systems and also to achieve the SDGs by raising public awareness and making concrete commitments. Agreeing on a common purpose for the global food systems is a fundamental prerequisite for any transformation process. Nations, cities, towns and communities are enabled to develop their own context and culture-specific vision, inspired by this universal purpose. Last but not least, the UN FSS is a unique opportunity to represent the voices of millions of women who work across the food system from field to table, contribute to global food security and put agroecology and regenerative agriculture at the forefront of the agenda.

IPS: The Barilla Foundation is a leader in food systems research. Earlier this year you presented the food system model, which includes diet and climate. Can you tell me something about the Foundation’s participation in the summit?

MA: The Barilla Foundation has actively contributed to the trip to the UNFSS through a variety of activities throughout the year, including the publication of a report on the US food systems; the start of the Seeds education center; and the publication of the Double health and climate pyramid with seven cultural versions. A high-level event on the role of food companies in transforming food systems will be organized in September as part of the initiative Repair the grocery business, with the UN SDSN, the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investments and the Santa Chiara Lab of the University of Siena.

IPS: Which successful systems are currently being implemented?

MA: The “Farm to Fork” strategy established by the European Commission in May 2020 can be seen as an attempt to develop a more integrated food strategy in the European Union (EU). It presents a comprehensive approach that, for the first time in Europe, covers every step in the food supply chain. It recognizes the major contribution that food system transformation can make to achieving the decarbonization target set in the European Green Deal by setting specific targets by 2030 that address both environmental and health concerns. The involvement of farmers, manufacturers, retailers and consumers will determine whether the process set out by the farm-to-fork strategy will be a game-changer in the EU.

How to Tell if Your Baby is Ready to Stop Drinking Formula – Cleveland Clinic
