Pet nutrition products are healthier, more functional, and cleaner than ever

Pet health and nutrition products are increasingly resembling human health and nutrition products. You don’t have to wander far down the aisle of the animal supply to see this development on the shelf. When you spell out for pets, the name of the game is the name of the game, using healthier, sophisticated products made from whole, fresh food sources and taking a more holistic approach to overall health.

Amanda Jepson, Senior Director of Marketing and International Sales at Biova, Johnston, IA, argues that pet owners want to treat their pets as well as they do. And they start with ingredient labels.

“Consumers take the health of their pets very seriously,” says Jepson. “While there are pets that need extra support in certain areas like joint health or mood, what is more important for consumers is what a product is free of. Many of these trends are centered on grain-free, preservative-free, raw clean label options. “

As consumers become more educated about nutrition trends and nutritional information in general, they are becoming discerning buyers for their pets. Ingredient suppliers are responding by introducing healthier options and those that have been clinically tested for specific functional benefits.

Substitute ingredients

The pet food market, for example, has long relied on fillers and additives that serve a structural purpose but have no nutritional benefit.

Ronald Figee, Commercial Development Manager of Biomega Group (Hordaland, Norway) says that the sugar alcohol glycerin is one of those ingredients. In pet food, glycerin acts as a sweetener, preservative and binding agent. While Figee recognizes that glycerin is generally recognized as safe (GRAS), he also points out that it does not necessarily provide additional health or nutritional benefits.

Companies like Biomega are stepping in with alternatives. Biomega hypothesized that it could replace glycerin in pet foods with its Salmigo Protect L60 branded hydrolyzed liquid protein product. In 2020, pet food research company Passion4Feed (Sandnes, Norway) conducted an independent study into the development of ingredients in Salmigo to see if the product could mimic the emollient effects of glycerin, says Figee.

“The results concluded that Salmigo Protect L60 offers high digestibility and hypoallergenic benefits, improves the shape and texture of the kibble, significantly improves palatability for cats, and slightly improves palatability for dogs,” reports Figee. “In addition, Salmigo Protect L60 has improved production throughput for manufacturers.”

Figee says pet food reformulation is becoming more common. Pet brands are now trading in certain preservatives, binders, and moisture control agents for nutrient-dense food-grade ingredients that can serve the same structural purpose.

Immune Health for Pets?

Products that support human immune system health are exploding, so it is not surprising that immune system health has recently come to the fore in pet products. While joint health and mobility are still the top concerns for dog owners, immune support and digestive issues are rapidly growing, says Julie Gasper, global portfolio manager for Cargill Health Technologies (Minneapolis, MN).

Cargill’s EpiCor postbiotic line of products has long been established in the human nutrition market. This year Cargill expanded the EpiCor family with the introduction of EpiCor Pets. It’s just another example of ingredients that were historically thought to be “human use” and are now entering the pet area.

“EpiCor Pets is an advanced, natural – as defined by the Association of American Feed Control Officials – immune-boosting product that supports the well-being and vitality of pets,” said Gasper. By increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut, the ingredient helps boost immune and digestive system health.

Trust and transparency are the key for pet owners who increasingly define “high quality pet food” and animal products as natural, recognizable and proven ingredients. “Consumers are hungry for pet food supplements backed by credible research,” adds Gasper. “It’s one of the main reasons we invested in more than a dozen published studies and multiple dog studies” about the company’s ingredient.

Alternative protein

Protein is expected to be a major growth market for animal health in the coming years. Similar to the human nutrition market, alternative protein ingredients are gaining in importance.

Amy McCarthy, vice president of Pet Nutrition at ADM Animal Nutrition (Quincy, IL) says that as consumers switch to a flexible diet for themselves by eating more plant-based foods, they will look to alternative proteins for their pets .

“Owners expect meals to be healthy and nutritious for their four-legged companions, which is fueling a growing interest in alternative ingredients like legumes, yeast, and stale grains in meat-based dog and cat foods,” says McCarthy.

In 2020, market researcher Mintel reported that younger pet owners in particular are interested in plant-based options for their pets. According to the Mintel report, 40% of dog food buyers ages 16 to 24 prefer plant-based dog food, compared with just 21% of dog food buyers ages 55+ .1

With growing interest, says McCarthy, “ADM is also exploring other sources of protein for humans and pets, including mycoproteins from mushrooms and fungi, insect proteins, and fermentative synthetic and cell-based proteins.”

Taking care of aging pets

Consumers purchasing pet health products often seek support for aging animals. As mentioned earlier, joint health remains one of the most popular categories in the pet nutritional supplement market.

Tim Hammond, vice president of sales and marketing for Bergstrom Nutrition (Vancouver, WA), says his company has seen a surge in inquiries for its branded pet ingredient methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), OptiMSM.

“Today, more than ever, premium brands and concerned consumers are placing importance on the safety and origin of the ingredients they make available to their animal companions,” says Hammond. “MSM benefits both active and aging pets by supporting joint health, reducing pain, and improving freedom of movement.”

Skeletomuscular function is also an important factor in pet health, especially as pets age. Ingredients that can help pets maintain muscle health are always of interest.

Recent research shows that a purified algae extract could be a top notch solution. An animal study sponsored by Marinova (Tasmania, Australia) in 20212 examined the effects of Marinova’s fucoidan, a polysaccharide derived from brown algae, on skeletal muscle mass in mice. The mice were randomly assigned to either 1) a control condition with no movement (n = 8), 2) a control condition with movement (n = 10), 3) a fucoidan condition with no movement (n = 10), or 4) a. assigned Fucoidan state with movement (n = 10). The mice in both fucoidan conditions received 400 mg / kg / day fucoidan for four weeks, while the mice in the control conditions received a water placebo. The researchers performed a fatigue test on a motorized treadmill, where the speed was gradually increased. Other tests included a grip strength test and an in situ muscle function test. After four weeks, administration of fucoidan was found to increase muscle size and strength under both exercise and non-exercise conditions compared to placebo.

Krutika Sen, business affairs manager at Marinova, says this study suggests that fucoidan affects skeletal muscle physiology. Marinova is currently working on further research to investigate the effects of fucoidan on muscle maintenance and exercise performance.

“Marinova has identified three animal health markets for fucoidan,” says Sen. “The first is multifunctional ingredients for aging pets. Fucoidan fits this category well. Marinova also sees increased consumption of fucoidan to help combat arthritis and gut health in pets. “

picky parents

Demanding animal parents drive the development of high-quality, healthy and well-researched products. Low-nutrient fillers are rapidly losing popularity as consumers seek transparency and functionality. Organic, GMO and clean label products are still in vogue. And with all of the innovation that is taking place in functional and alternative ingredients, don’t forget the importance of taste / palatability.

Owners consider pets to be family members, says Kristen Marshall, digital marketing manager at Verdure Sciences (Noblesville, IN) and will continue to shop accordingly. “Healthcare products for pets target applications that mimic human counterparts. [These applications include] Joint health and movement, gut and digestive health, stress, mood, immune health, and oral health, to name a few. ”The pet health market often demands flexibility in terms of tolerability, solubility, and dosage of ingredients, she adds, so formulators should be ready be able to change and adapt as needed.

Harness the power of the body’s hormones for better health

When a hormone is out of whack, you can feel like you’re stuck in the mud or strapped to a runaway horse. Just ask someone with untreated Graves’ or Hashimoto’s disease (these are high or low thyroid levels), hypogonadism (low testosterone or estrogen deficiency), or uncontrolled diabetes. Because hormones are the chemical messengers of your body and have a direct influence on your metabolism, energy level, hunger, cognition, sexual function / reproduction and mood.

This mix of nutrients lets your appetite regulating hormones leptin (I’m full) and ghrelin (I’m hungry) signal you accordingly so you don’t overeat. Overeating and obesity regulate many hormonal systems.

In addition, a healthy diet will nourish your thyroid hormones, which also help regulate weight. Perhaps most importantly, a healthy diet regulates the work of trillions of microbes in your gut biome that help regulate hormone production and produce hormone-like substances.

Cope with stress, sleep peacefully. Cortisol is a hormone released by the adrenal gland in response to stress. When chronically elevated, it can reduce the activity of your hypothalamus, which in turn can lead to imbalances in the messenger substances that affect sleep, eating, sexual activity, and cognition and mood. Then you can get tired and gain weight. Therefore, it is important to regularly exercise, meditate, take deep breaths, hang out with friends, volunteer to help others, and / or talk to a therapist. Adherence To a Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk of Diabetes

The Role of the Mediterranean Diet: Eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight can potentially reduce the risk of developing diabetes for the US population.

A Mediterranean diet is one of the few healthy eating habits that has been linked to significant health improvements. It is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, legumes, and olive oil and is more common in European countries. It is recommended by the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to help reduce the risk of chronic disease. In addition, it is linked to a reduced risk of diabetes in Mediterranean and European countries. However, it is unclear that the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of developing diabetes in the US population. In a large US cohort study with black and white men and women, this study investigated whether Mediterranean eating behavior is linked to the risk of diabetes.

This study was a prospective cohort study that included patients in previous research, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, which looked at the causes of heart disease in over 400,000 adults in the United States. In this study, data were collected from 11,991 participants on their first visit. Participants were excluded if they were Asian or Indian due to the small sample size; were black and from Maryland and Minnesota, unable to decipher the influence of geographic region on race; if they have a history or history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes or cancer; or if they were derived from the answers to the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) or if they had ten or more missing FFQ elements.

One of the statistical methods was an FFQ questionnaire to record the food intake of each patient on their first and third visits. The data recorded from the survey was used in the scores for the Mediterranean Alternative Diet (aMed). The scores ranged from 0 to 9 points, with 1 point being awarded if the patient reported consuming vegetables, fruits, or legumes himself, and 1 point if the patient reported consuming red or processed meat. The higher the aMed score, the higher the adherence to a Mediterranean diet. They also used Cox’s proportional hazard regression models to estimate the hazard ratios and confidence intervals for the associations between aMed scores and incidents of diabetes. Incidence diabetes was defined as: if the patient was diagnosed by a doctor, had taken diabetes medication in the past two weeks, had a fasting blood sugar of 126 mg / dL or more, or a non-fasting blood sugar of 200 mg / dL or above. Variables were also used in the Cox regression analyzes, including energy intake, age, gender, race, educational level, smoking status and physical activity, and clinical mediators of diabetes. They were all stratified by race and body mass index (BMI).

During a median follow-up of 22 years, this analysis found 4,024 cases of diabetes among the 11,991 participants. In summary, aMed scores and incidents of diabetes were higher in blacks than whites, but the risk of diabetes was reduced by up to 17% in both races. In addition, the associations between aMed scores and incidents of diabetes were found to be stronger in patients with a healthy baseline BMI, indicating that obesity or overweight outweighs the benefits of a healthy Mediterranean diet, as shown in the ARIC study and other U.S. Population. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that following a Mediterranean diet without weight loss may not reduce the risk of diabetes in overweight or obese populations. While following a Mediterranean diet could lower the risk of diabetes in people with healthy BMI, the discussion about restricting calories to achieve and maintain a healthy weight should remain one of the most important tasks of diabetes prevention. Overall, eating and following a Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of diabetes in a community-based US population, especially for black and normal weight individuals. Future studies should be conducted to determine whether a Mediterranean diet that results in clinically meaningful weight loss can reduce the future risk of diabetes in those who are overweight or obese.
