Every now and then I am confronted with a meal that I have never heard of before. Most recently it was tiger nuts.

Obviously I assumed it was a real nut – who wouldn’t? But I was wrong; Tigernuts do not belong to the nut family at all. However, it has stripes on its outer shell that resemble a tiger. So there is.

What are tiger nuts?

Tigernuts are actually tubers, vegetables that grow underground from the root of a plant, such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, jicama, and yams. They have been around for centuries, possibly originating in Egypt, and are also known as chufa nuts and tiger nuts. They have a nutty, earthy taste with a hint of vanilla aroma. They’re usually eaten either roasted, ground (made into flour or butter), or even pressed into milk.

Why are Tigernuts so popular now?

They have been eaten in one form or another since Neolithic Egypt and have been enjoyed by Spaniards since the 18th century. But I can’t help but wonder why I only found out about her now.

It seems that their new popularity is due to their also very popular friend, the AIP diet – or the autoimmune protocol – which aims to reduce inflammation, pain, and other symptoms caused by autoimmune diseases. Some consider the AIP diet to be an extension of the Paleo diet, but stricter. How do you follow the AIP diet?

As with the Paleo diet, the AIP diet has a long list of foods that get either a red light or a green light, but it also has two phases:

Phase one is the elimination phase, which completely eliminates foods like grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, nightshades, eggs, dairy products, alcohol, coffee, oils, food additives, refined and processed sugars. This phase is followed for about 30 to 90 days, or until a person is supposedly feeling better.

Next comes the reintroduction phase, in which the avoided foods are gradually reintroduced into the diet, depending on the tolerability of the person. What is tolerated can be reintroduced into the diet in the long term, and what is not remains taboo.

As you can see from the prohibited foods at the beginning, nuts are on this list. Therefore, for those looking for a substitute for nuts, they discovered the tiger nut.

Are there nutritional benefits of the tiger nut?

One ounce of tiger nuts contains 120 calories, 10 grams of fiber, 7 grams of fat (mostly monounsaturated), and 2 grams of protein. They’re also a good source of antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and calcium.

There is limited research specifically on tiger nuts and their health benefits; However, we know the general health benefits of foods high in fiber, antioxidants, and monounsaturated fats.

For example, it has been shown that foods high in fiber may potentially relieve constipation, improve digestion, and help lower cholesterol and maintain blood sugar levels.

Finally, monounsaturated fats are also known to protect the heart and create a feeling of satiety, which can help with weight management.

How to Enjoy Tigernuts

Tiger nuts can be enjoyed just like normal tree nuts. They can be added to trail mix, mixed in yogurts, hot or cold muesli, or tossed on a salad.

Ground into flour, they can be used for baking, especially for muffins, or for breading chicken chops or fish fillets. Tigernut butter can be spread on 100% wholemeal toast or crackers or added to a smoothie.

Bottom line:

Whether or not you are following an AIP diet, you can definitely consider adding tiger nuts to your diet. They are allergy-free, plant-based, sustainable and contain health-promoting nutrients.
